FAIRMONT —
A Marion County student has been expelled for one calendar year.
A hearing lasting a little more than an hour was held Monday night during a special session of the Marion County Board of Education. The hearing, which took place at the Central Office of Marion County Schools, was closed to the public because the case involved a student.
The board members met in executive session with attorney Stephen Brooks from Flaherty Sensabaugh Bonasso PLLC, representing Marion County Schools, and the student and that individual’s guardians. Involved parties were called in to testify.
After the executive session was concluded, Superintendent of Schools Gary Price recommended that the student be expelled for one school year for violation of the Safe Schools Act. The board members voted 5-0 to approve the recommendation.
“I believe you are really remorseful for what you said,” board member Mary “Sis” Murray told the student, “but I do want you to understand that many times people say things that can’t be taken back. I think that you need to think about that.”
She said the student needs to remember that it’s easy for people to quickly make harsh, hateful comments when maybe they don’t really mean them in their hearts, but they have to consider how the other person is receiving those remarks.
“I’m really sorry this happened to you, but I think you maybe can really learn something very valuable,” Murray said to the young person.
