Pierpont working to build diversity

$4,650 grant to help with college’s vision

FAIRMONT — Pierpont Community & Technical College received a grant that will help it jump-start an initiative to spread awareness of academic possibilities to all demographic groups within the region.

At Tuesday’s board of governors meeting, Sarah Hensley, the vice president of community engagement at Pierpont, said that the college was awarded $4,650 to help with their vision.

“It won’t cover all of the expenses,” Hensley said. “But it is going to go a very long way in helping us launch these efforts.”

With the funds from the Diversity for Equity Grant, staff will work to diversify the college’s student population through the recruitment of underrepresented students in the area. Specifically, Hensley said that they want to reach out to the African-American community.
