Charter talks held behind closed doors

City meeting with FGH may be in violation of state law

FAIRMONT — City council may have stepped across the line when it met in executive session to discuss possible changes to the city charter as it relates to Fairmont General Hospital.

The hospital may be considering severing its relationship with city hall by changing the make-up of its board of directors, who are appointed by council.

It appears that operating in executive session is a common practice for Fairmont City Council. The Times West Virginian sought answers about whether or not council violated sunshine laws when it discussed this issue for more than an hour behind closed doors on June 23.

The reason council gave for needing to meet in executive session was to discuss personnel matters and issues arising out of the sale or lease of property.
