FAIRMONT — City council will be appointing an interim city manager to fill the vacancy left open after Jim Snider leaves to take a job in his hometown Canton, Ill.
Snider tendered his resignation last week on the heels of a job offer as city administrator.
Though council will discuss the matter and make a decision at next week’s meeting during executive session, sources within the city’s administration say council will offer the interim position to city planner Jay Rogers, who has expressed interest in the job. Rogers was one of the original applicants for the position before council decided to hire Snider in early Spring 2008.
On Wednesday, Rogers reiterated his statement from last week, "If council is interested in me filling the position, I am interested in the job.”
Snider deferred to council by not offering the name of anyone seeking the job, but said the city manager’s position oversees the city government, so a senior manager would be able to step into the city manager’s position while still holding onto their current position. Fairmont has an annual general fund of $10.9 million and has about 182 full-time employees.
After rattling off a few examples of senior managers stepping up to take jobs as city managers in other cities, Snider said, “Based on my past experience, it would be a logical choice to appoint a senior staff member to serve as interim.”
