FAIRMONT —
The school bond committee is continuing to work to get the word out about the proposed bond.
Jeff Wise, managing director of Blackwood Associates Inc. and MSES Consultants Inc., gave a presentation at Monday night’s Marion County Board of Education meeting about the scope of the proposed school bond project.
Last week, Wise and his colleague Pam Wean, senior architect, met with the citizens committee that is working to promote the $10 million bond, which will include the construction of a competition gymnasium and expansion of the cafeteria and commons areas at North Marion High School. The bond election will take place along with the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
The committee discussed the problems with locating the new gymnasium near the hillside behind the school because of all the infrastructure that would have to be built and how costly it would be. If stationed there, the gym could only have around 1,700 seats in order to make it affordable, Wise said. This would provide less seating than the current gym, which fits between 2,200 and 2,300 people.
The committee strongly felt that they wouldn’t be able to get Marion County voters to support the bond unless the new gymnasium seated at least 2,500 individuals and had a court size of 50 by 92 feet. They are now looking at locating the gym in the school’s lower parking lot area, which would allow room for the seating capacity they want. The school’s current gym would become the practice facility.
