Dealing with property taxes can seem incredibly difficult, but with preparation and online services paying your taxes can be incredibly easy.
Jim Priester, Marion County assessor, says that you have to pay taxes on what you own as of July 1.
“Not July 2, not June 30, but July 1st; it’s what you own as of that day,” Priester said. “And you’re assessed on that; then you receive a tax bill the following July for what you owned the previous year.”
There are two types of property taxes a resident has to pay, personal property and real property.
Personal property includes vehicles, trailers, aircraft, boats, ATVs and farm machinery. To find out the complete list of what falls under personal property visit the Marion County Assessor’s Office.
Real property includes anything that is attached to the ground meaning your house or shed or even the land itself.
Priester notes that swimming pools are listed under real property but only if they are under ground.
“Above-ground pools can be moved so, they are not real property,” Priester said.
The toughest issue for the assessor’s office is getting every single individual assessed.
“We’ve tried different ways to make it a little bit easier,” Priester said. “The bottom line is that it falls on the individual to make the effort to get assessed.”

Three Rivers Festival features variety of entertainment
The 34th annual West Virginia Three Rivers Festival started in fine form Thursday night with a grand feature parade through downtown Fairmont, ending at Palatine Park with opening ceremonies.
