Falcons set to face Charleston

FAIRMONT — Fairmont State looks to keep the good vibes going — and start a win streak — today when the Falcons visit Charleston at University of Charleston Stadium.

Kickoff is set for noon.

Fairmont State (1-3, 1-1 WVIAC) is coming off its first win of the season last week, a 25-20 victory over West Liberty in the team’s home opener. Charleston (3-1, 1-1) lost a tight 16-10 contest to Shepherd.

Here’s a brief look at today’s matchup:



This season: FSU 1-3; Charleston 3-1.

Coaches: FSU — Mike Lopez (fifth season); Charleston — Pat Kirkland (second season).

Key players: FSU — Bobby Vega, QB; Chris St. Hilaire, WR; Trevor Malnick, LB; C.J. Goodwin, WR. Charleston — Kenjay Trueblood, RB; Bo Whitney, WR.

FSU notes: Vega threw for a career-high 361 yards and three touchdowns and set a school record with 67 pass attempts last week. ... Chris St. Hilaire’s 12 catches last week were a career best. ... FSU’s 386 yards of total offense against the ‘Toppers were a season-high. ... St. Hilaire and C.J. Goodwin both went over 100 yards receiving against West Liberty. The last time FSU had two receivers go over the century mark was when St. Hilaire and Perry Baker both went over 100 yards against Seton Hill on October 30, 2010. .... Goodwin’s 83-yard TD reception is tied for the third longest passing play in school history and the seventh-longest play in Division II through four weeks. ... LB Trevor Malnick recorded his first career sack and interception against WLU. ... Chris Kish averaged 42.8 yards per punt and had dropped three inside the 20-yard line.

Charleston notes: UC leads the league with 209 rushing yards per game this season and rank second offense (379) and third in scoring (26). ... The Golden Eagles are in the top 25 in the country in the following defensive categories: pass defense (11th), total defense (17th), and scoring defense (21st). ... Jordan Roberts has carried the load for the UC offense, tallying 391 yards and three scores on the ground this season. ... UC had a 99-yard passing play for a touchdown against St. Joseph’s; it is  the longest play Division II this season.

Series notes: UC is one of two teams on FSU’s schedule to own the lead in the all-time series. The Golden Eagles are 7-5-1 all-time against the Falcons. Fairmont State snapped a four-game losing streak against UC last season with a 19-14 home win.

    Fairmont State’s Chelsea Cobb was named the Daktronics Atlantic Region Player of the Year and outfielder Holly Frampton was a first team all-region selection. Freshman Courtney Iacobacci was a second team all-region selection.
