CALIFORNIA, Pa. —
Fairmont State’s Lady Falcons started slow and finished slow here Tuesday evening against California (Pa.) University at Hamer Hall and as a result dropped an 82-57 decision against the Lady Vulcans.
Cal looked sharp in its season-opener, racing to a 15-1 lead over FSU in the game’s first 7:21. The Lady Vulcans connected on six of their first 11 field goal attempts, while the Lady Falcons misfired on their first nine shots from the field.
Fairmont was able to close the margin to 11 midway through the first half, but the Lady Vulcans pushed it back to 15 at 39-24 at the break.
In the second half, Fairmont rallied. Three times the Lady Falcons closed the deficit to seven points – first at 47-40 on a 3-pointer by Kaitlin Snyder which capped a 16-8 FSU run to start the final 20 minutes. Then again at 50-43 on a Hailey Garrett jumper and finally at 52-45 on a Kendra Holmes’ bucket with 11:08 left to play.
However, in the game's final 11 minutes, California outscored FSU 30-12 to cruise to the 25-point victory.
The loss, Fairmont's second in a row, dropped the Lady Falcons to 1-2.
Once again FSU struggled with making turnovers and shooting the basketball. Fairmont was just 17-of-44 from the field (38.6 percent), including a 3-of-11 performance (27.2 percent) from 3-point range. The Lady Falcons also turned the ball over 23 times compared to just 15 by Cal.
The Lady Vulcans also held a commanding 45-27 edge on the backboards. Twenty-one of Cal’s 45 rebounds came on the offensive glass.
California, which connected on 47.1 percent of its field goal attempts (33-of-70), placed four players in double digits in the scoring column, led by Ashley Hines and Emma Mahady’s 18 points apiece. Hines also pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. The Lady Vulcans also got 12 points from Irina Kukoli and 10 points and eight rebounds from Elena Antonenko.
Fairmont State was paced by Garrett’s 16 points and five rebounds. She got most of her points at the foul line, where she was 10-of-14. From the field Garrett was just 3-of-11.
Briana Welch and Holmes finished with 11 points apiece. Holmes also grabbed a team-high six rebounds, while Welch tallied four.
FSU’s Snyder ended up with 10 points and six assists, but she was just 3-of-10 shooting from the field.
Lady Falcon head coach Steve McDonald was unavailable for comment after the game.
Fairmont State will be idle now until Nov. 20, when it opens West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at home at the Joe Retton Arena against Shepherd University in the first game of a doubleheader with the FSU men. Tipoff time for the women's contest is 5:30 p.m.
