FSU golfers finish third

ATHENS — Fairmont State’s Justin Caroli shot four-under par (140) to lead Fairmont State to a third place finish at the WVIAC Southern at Pipestem Resort.

Matt Hicks from West Liberty was the individual medalist with Caroli trailing by five strokes.. The Hilltoppers won the event with a score of 572, followed by Concord (576) and Fairmont State and Ohio Valley tying for third (582).

FSU’s Zach Rudy finished tied for fifth with a 143, Ben Palmer tied for 16th (147), Will Gautreau was tied for 30th (152) and Joel Cano finished 63rd (169) to help pace the Falcons.

Fairmont State (71-15-2) will wrap up the fall season with the WVIAC Championship starting Monday at Stonewall Resort.

  • Lopez ‘excited’ about Fairmont State signing class

    There were plenty of smiles around Fairmont State University’s football office at the Feaster Center Wednesday afternoon.
    Coach Mike Lopez and his staff had 21 players in the fold on the first day of the signing period, and Lopez is confident the Falcons are in position to continue building after posting a 7-4 record in 2011.

    One of the hottest teams in the West Virginia Conference paid a visit to the Joe Retton Arena on Wednesday evening and received a rude welcoming from Fairmont State’s Lady Falcons.
    Pitt-Johnstown, winners of three in a row and eight of its last 10, got thoroughly dominated for 32 of the game’s 40 minutes as FSU halted the Lady Mountain Cats’ winning ways with an 88-66 victory.

    It was an electric atmosphere here Wednesday evening at the Joe Retton Arena.
    Unfortunately, Fairmont State University’s men’s basketball team ran out of juice in the waning minutes and fell, 92-87, to visiting Pitt-Johnstown.

    Chris Thompson didn’t get much sleep Thursday night.
    Fairmont State’s 6-2 senior forward and his teammates had just endured their third straight loss, and for the third straight outing, Thompson, who had been pretty consistent with his play prior to the three-game losing streak, didn’t show up.

    Fairmont State’s Lady Falcons used balanced scoring, a late run down the stretch in the opening half and a big second-half performance from junior point guard Kaitlin Snyder to cruise past Bluefield State here Saturday afternoon at the Ned Shott Gymnasium, 77-53.

  • Glenville completes season sweep of Falcons

    Glenville State can make a living playing Fairmont State this season in men’s basketball.
    That’s because half of the lowly Pioneers’ four victories this season have come at the expense of the Falcons.
    Thursday evening here at the Jesse R. Lilly Gymnasium, Glenville State completed the regular-season sweep of Fairmont State, rolling to an impressive 80-59 victory over the floundering Falcons.

    Glenville State, the second-place team in the West Virginia Conference, shook off a horrid shooting performance in the first half, caught fire from the field in the final 20 minutes and rolled to a 92-78 victory over visiting Fairmont State here Thursday evening at the Jesse R. Lilly Gymnasium.
