FSU’s Black earns academic honor

FAIRMONT — Fairmont State senior linebacker Nate Black was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) second team academic All-District 2 Wednesday for his performance on the field and the classroom.

Black was among the league leaders in total tackles and solo tackles, and was recently named to the All-WVIAC first team for the second time in his career. He leaves Fairmont State as one of the school’s leaders in solo tackles and tackles for a loss.

Black, who has maintained a 3.5 grade-point average in business/marketing, was the only player from the WVIAC to be named to one of the two teams.

  • Griffins pound FSU men, 121-104

    Seton Hill University established a new school record for points in a game in a wild, 121-104, victory over visiting Fairmont State University here Thursday evening at the Salvitti Gymnasium.
    The 121 points for the Griffins broke their old mark of 118 which was set earlier this season in a 118-84 victory over Ohio Valley.

    Kaitlin Snyder has been a money player all season long for Fairmont State University.
    Thursday evening with the game on the line here against Seton Hill University at the Salvitti Gymnasium the Lady Falcons' junior All-American candidate came up big once again, going a perfect 4-of-4 at the foul line in the final 28 seconds to help FSU hold off the pesky Lady Griffins and record a hard-fought 70-67 victory.

    Fairmont State University added Malnick to its list of recruits who have signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Falcons this fall.

  • Lopez ‘excited’ about Fairmont State signing class

    There were plenty of smiles around Fairmont State University’s football office at the Feaster Center Wednesday afternoon.
    Coach Mike Lopez and his staff had 21 players in the fold on the first day of the signing period, and Lopez is confident the Falcons are in position to continue building after posting a 7-4 record in 2011.

    One of the hottest teams in the West Virginia Conference paid a visit to the Joe Retton Arena on Wednesday evening and received a rude welcoming from Fairmont State’s Lady Falcons.
    Pitt-Johnstown, winners of three in a row and eight of its last 10, got thoroughly dominated for 32 of the game’s 40 minutes as FSU halted the Lady Mountain Cats’ winning ways with an 88-66 victory.

    It was an electric atmosphere here Wednesday evening at the Joe Retton Arena.
    Unfortunately, Fairmont State University’s men’s basketball team ran out of juice in the waning minutes and fell, 92-87, to visiting Pitt-Johnstown.

    Chris Thompson didn’t get much sleep Thursday night.
    Fairmont State’s 6-2 senior forward and his teammates had just endured their third straight loss, and for the third straight outing, Thompson, who had been pretty consistent with his play prior to the three-game losing streak, didn’t show up.
