FSU men set for WVIAC tourney

Falcons to host Ohio Valley at 7:30 p.m. today

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont State University men’s basketball team is set to tip off at 7:30 p.m. today at Joe Retton Arena against Ohio Valley.

This game will mark another crucial time for Falcons head coach Jerrod Calhoun.

Why?

Because this is the first time the new and improved Falcons will play in the WVIAC tournament with Calhoun at the helm.

“I think our entire staff and our entire program is really, really excited to play in our first tournament together,” Calhoun said Monday. “We haven’t had much success lately in the conference tournament as a program, so we’re looking forward to winning the game tomorrow night.”

Just last week, FSU defeated the Fighting Scots.

“We’re looking forward to a team who we’ve beaten twice,” Calhoun said. “But you can’t overlook anybody this time of the year.

“You look around the country and there’s been a lot of upsets all over the country, because teams overlook people. So you have to take one game at a time.”

In the 90-42 shellacking, FSU constantly pressured OVU. When the game was finished, the Falcons had forced the Fighting Scots into 27 turnovers. They also out-rebounded OVU, 49-24.

The Falcons also played their A-game on the offensive side of the ball: Fairmont State shot 50 percent from the field.

“When we guard people and when we play defense while having intensity, we can beat anybody in the country,” Calhoun said. “We’ve proven that all season. This time of the year, the teams that make easy shots and rebound the basketball are going to be the teams who will be successful.”
