FSU in search of homecoming win

FAIRMONT — Fairmont State’s football team celebrates homecoming — and looks to get a winning streak going — when it plays host to Seton Hill at Duvall-Rosier Field this afternoon at 2 p.m.

The game will be broadcast on delay on ROOT Sports Pittsburgh and shown at 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Falcons moved to 2-4 and 2-2 in the West Virginia Conference thanks to a huge comeback last week, scoring 40 second-half points in a 49-32 win over West Virginian Wesleyan.

Winless Seton Hill, meanwhile, wasted a 12-point third-quarter lead on its way to a 29-26 loss to Concord last Saturday.

Here’s a brief look at today’s matchup:

This season: FSU 2-4; Seton Hill 0-7

Coaches: FSU — Mike Lopez (fifth season); Seton Hill — Joel Dolinski (fifth season).

Key players: FSU — Bobby Vega, QB; Matt Wilmer, WR; Garrett Davis, LB. Seton Hill — Niko Hall-Brown, WR; D.J. Carter, WR; Andrew Jackson, QB.

Seton Hill notes: Seton Hill has lost 20 of its past 21 games and went 1-10 last season. ... The Griffins have allowed more than 40 points in three games but have also dropped three by fewer than eight points, including a 29-26 home loss to Concord last week. ... Seton Hill is second in the league in passing offense (251.6 yards per game) and last in rushing offense (29.6). ... Hall-Brown is tied for first in the WVC with 74.4 yards per game. He has 40 receptions for 521 yards and four touchdowns. ... Carter has added 43 catches for 480 yards and a TD. ... Seton Hill has seven players with at least 13 catches this season. ... Jackson has made the last two starts at quarterback for SHU. He was 22 of 30 for 265 yards and four touchdowns last week. ... Sophomore LB Tyler Zimmer is tied for 17th in the country in tackles with 10.86 per game. Zimmer has 79 total tackles (15 for a loss) and eight sacks. ... The Griffins are last in the conference in time of possession (27:15).

FSU notes: FSU hasn’t won back-to-back games since winning three in a row from Sept. 24 to Oct. 6 last season. ... Vega threw for 275 yards and five TDs in last week’s win over West Virginian Wesleyan, a game in which the Falcons rallied with 40 second-half points. ... Prior to last week the Falcons had scored just 37 points in the second half. ... Wilmer had 163 yards and three TDs, while RB Daniel Monroe had 147 yards rushing in the win. ... Davis has led the team in tackles in each of his four starts this season. ... FSU’s offensive opponents have scored TDs in just eight of their 17 attempts (47 percent) inside the 20-yard line this season.

Series notes: Fairmont State leads the all-time series against Seton Hill, 4-1. SHU’s lone victory came in Fairmont in 2008. FSU used a punt return and an interception runback for a score to post a 38-20 win in Greensburg, Pa., last season.
