FAIRMONT —
Fairmont State possesses two of the more talented true freshmen in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this season in Hailey Garrett and Emily Lohr.
Saturday afternoon at the Joe Retton Arena that duo combined for 36 points and nine rebounds to help lead FSU to 66-56 victory over visiting Alderson-Broaddus.
The win, Fairmont's second in a row and its third in four outings, improved the Lady Falcons to 10-5 overall and to 7-4 in the league.
FSU, which is currently sixth in the 15-team WVIAC standings, also got 19 points and six assists from Kaitlin Snyder and six points and a game-high eight steals from Tiffany Nicholson in Saturday's win.
In the first half Lohr, a 6-1 forward from Stoystown, Pa., sparked Fairmont's offense scoring 14 of her 16 points to help FSU open a 40-32 lead at the break. The 16 points tied Lohr's career high which she set Wednesday in a victory over Shepherd.
“I'm always a little nervous before games, but once the game gets going and I feel the flow of it I get more comfortable and just go with it,” said Lohr, who was 5-of-7 from the field, including 2-of-4 on 3-point field goals. “When I came in here this season it was really hard for me to adjust at first because it was totally different to what I was used to in high school. With every game, though, I get what coach is saying more and more and I know now what he expects and wants from me.”
In the second half Garrett, a 6-foot center from North Marion High School, heated up inside and scored 12 of her game-high 20 points to help the Lady Falcons quell all of A-B's attempts at a rally.
“Emily and I have been shooting and working on things together after practice trying to get our shots down and I think what it really comes down to is we're both starting to get more comfortable with what we're doing on the floor,” said Garrett, who was 9-of-12 from the field and grabbed a team-high six rebounds. “As a team we're starting to get comfortable playing with one another which I believe is only going to help us improve.”
Garrett is averaging 12.3 points and 6.1 rebounds per outing this year, while Lohr chips in 9.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per contest. Lohr is also second on the team in made 3-pointers with 14.
“We tell any freshman who plays for us and we've told those two when January starts you're not a freshman anymore,” said FSU coach Steve McDonald. “You need to start thinking like you're supposed to be here, you're supposed to be able to do things on the floor and you're supposed to score. I think both of those kids are really benefiting from the opportunity to play.
“We told both of them when we recruited them that we felt like they'd have the opportunity to play for us as freshmen and they're getting that chance. I believe both of them are evolving as players and we're very pleased with their development.”
Fairmont State shot 49.1 percent from the field as a team (26-of-53) in the win and offset A-B's huge 46-24 advantage in rebounding by forcing the Lady Battlers to shoot just 35.8 percent from the field (19-of-53) and commit 26 turnovers.
A-B, which lost its fifth straight game and fell to 5-11 overall and to 3-10 in the league, was led by Amanda Peoples' 13 points and game-high 18 rebounds. No other Lady Battler reached double figures in the loss.
FSU will return to action Monday with a road trip to Buckhannon to face third-place West Virginia Wesleyan in a 5:30 p.m. contest at the Rockefeller Center. That game will be the first of three straight road trips for the Lady Falcons.
