FSU closes home season vs. State

FAIRMONT — While Fairmont State’s football team won’t make the playoffs or even finish with a winning record, the 2012 Falcons still have a few goals to attain.

One is to finish .500. The other can happen with a win today, as FSU is gunning for its first unbeaten record at home since 1981 when it welcomes West Virginia State at 1 p.m. at Duvall-Rosier Field.

The Falcons (3-5, 3-3 WVIAC) are looking to bounce back after a 41-10 loss at Concord last Saturday. The Mountain Lions scored 21 points off four FSU turnovers to pull away from the Falcons.

State (2-7, 1-5 WVIAC) fell in its home finale to West Virginia Wesleyan last Saturday, 42-14, giving up 501 yards of offense.

Here’s a brief look at today’s matchup:

Coaches: Mike Lopez (fifth season); Earl Monroe (seventh season)

FSU notes: The Falcons are playing just four home games this season. ... The Falcons are averaging 219.5 yards per game on the ground in their last two wins. In the first five games, FSU was averaging just 74.6 yards on the ground. FSU managed just 70 yards rushing against Concord. ... After a sluggish start due to naggig injuries, RB Daniel Monroe has climbed among the rushing leaders in the WVIAC. He’s third in the league in rushing yards (581) and average per game (83.0). ... The Falcons are third in the league in time of possession at 30:06 minutes per game. ... FSU has put together 32 plays of 20-plus yards in  three home games, but has the same number in five road games.
