When you think of the city of Fairmont, what is the first thing that comes to mind?
Perhaps it’s the courthouse — nestled in the heart of downtown, a depiction of regal architecture that is a symbol of our city’s history. Or maybe you think of the “Million Dollar” bridge that connects east and west side; an optimistic landscape which is a more recent addition to Marion County. Then again, you may picture a site that is connected to your own personal memories.
Either way, each and every person who reads this will still imagine something that represents Fairmont for them.
Unfortunately, many teens see Fairmont as a city with lots of room for improvement. While it has some strong points, there is nothing that stands out and makes the city unique. Many youth have wondered, how can this be changed? Is there anything that can be done that would make Fairmont a more exciting place to live?
Without money, time, workers, or a location, the development of any plans for extravagant creations is very limited. Therefore, a more accessible route to make Fairmont exceptional must be found. After all, no one wants to remember their hometown as a place they couldn’t wait to grow out of. This is where the changes must begin.
A positive mindset is the heart of a positive outlook. Sometimes, you have to look for diamonds in the rough, and in that you can create lots of new opportunities for yourself. For instance, take a moment to picture the High Level Bridge. Most will visualize the familiar sight of a viaduct that’s complete with arches and lights underneath. But a second glance could reveal more — like geese flying overhead, boats racing below, and picturesque scenes to either side. With one simple gaze, a repetitive sight takes on a new and ever-changing point of view.
Now try to imagine part of Fairmont State University. Throughout many public buildings in Fairmont you can see photos of the college in the past, notable people who have gone to the school, and old sports jerseys or other memorabilia. However, this symbol of the past will also be a guide to the future for many. The college not only has many historically prominent buildings and annual events, but also several new annexes … and more community happenings are being held on the campus all the time. Finally, think about something that’s always “just been there” near your home or a road that you frequently travel on. You know that old abandoned building that you rarely take notice to, or the train tracks you cross over on your way to school every morning? The next time you pass that place, take a look around and see what else is nearby. A scene that seems oh-too-familiar just might take on a whole new meaning for you.
It’s hard to tell what interesting — or even remarkable — things you may discover if you try this outlook all across town. Opportunities to discover excitement and fun are lurking everywhere — you just need the initiative to find them. With this outlook, the chances of finding a new favorite location or activity are limitless. You don’t need lots of money or time to invent memories of Fairmont. All of the memories are out there, ready to be made. All you need is some motivation, a careful eye, and to keep in mind that everything has an interesting background waiting to be discovered. And with that, you’ll create noteworthy memories that are sure to last a lifetime.

Commanding the field
How many can distinctively conduct the “The Star-Spangled Banner” in ¾ time using the appropriate cut-offs and the upbeat introductions? How many can direct a band marching backward and keeping time to the parade style songs? These are only the tryouts, while in reality the job of field commander entitles much more.

Can you imagine living a day without music? Or having a month without your iPod or mp3 player? Just think of how the world would be if you were not able to hear your favorite song echo through a speaker. Well, the way that music players have branched out over the years, there are no worries for not having music by your side for generations to come.

A night to remember
The night was just like any other dance we seniors had attended. North Marion’s Prom of 2009 hit it off from the start. Students danced to songs including “Just Dance”, by Lady Gaga and “When You Say Nothing at All.”

On April 23, East Fairmont High School’s Elizabethans and My Fair Ladies began their eight-hour journey to Williamsburg, Va.

Making it worthwhile
During the spring and the fall, a very important event happens to a selected group at Fairmont Senior High School. This event is the inductions of the National Honor Society.
