Fujiyama Japanese Restaurant, in business for just a week, is pleased to be staying busy and getting repeat customers.
“We’re doing very good,” said owner Zhen Weng. “Everybody’s happy. People love it here.”
He opened the restaurant at 422 Marion Square in Fairmont on Monday, July 16. Customers can find the business in the Marion Square Shopping Plaza, off Country Club Road, where Backwoods Grill was formerly located.
The menu includes soups and salads, cooked and raw appetizers, sushi, a wide array of rolls, and a variety of steak, chicken, fish and seafood entrees. Fujiyama created a roll called the West Virginia Roll, which Weng said everyone likes.
Weng also owns the Fujiyama restaurant in Morgantown. He said a lot of customers from Marion County were dining at the Morgantown location, which is what led him to start a business in Fairmont.
The building at Marion Square went through major renovations during a two- or three-month period. Weng said he and his brother did a lot of the work.
“We tore down everything — everything is new 100 percent,” he said.
He said the location is not on the main road and is somewhat hidden, but he’s not worried and thinks it will do well. Many customers have been stopping by the restaurant and then coming back for more, and business is already going better than Weng expected.
He runs Fujiyama with the help of about 10 employees and his wife Tara Lin. Together, they make a good team.
“I couldn’t do anything without her,” he said of his wife. “She’s a good helper.”
They are dedicated to always offering good food and service and keeping the restaurant clean all the time. Weng believes these three qualities are key for any establishment to be successful.
He said he likes to make people happy and make them smile.
Weng, who is Chinese, has been living in the United States for 28 years, with the past 19 in Morgantown. He spent several years learning cooking skills while working for different restaurants all over the country. Weng has been involved in business for more than two decades and has experience in both Chinese and Japanese cuisine.
He owns and operates many Chinese and Japanese restaurants in various locations. In a couple weeks, he will be opening a Fujiyama in Charleston. Weng said a lot of people have been eagerly awaiting its arrival.
