MANNINGTON —
Mountaineer Shaved Ice is offering cool, tasty treats to the area.
Bonnita Pena and her husband Joe and son Michael own the business, which is operated out of a trailer based in Mannington. The trailer can typically be found parked on Main Street across from T&L Hot Dogs and the 7-Eleven convenience store.
Mountaineer Shaved Ice offers 25 flavors of shaved ice in two sizes, and six of the flavors are available in sugar free. Right now, the small size costs $1 and large is $2. Customers can choose from cherry, banana, dreamsickle, watermelon, tutti frutti, black raspberry, pina colada, dinosaur (cherry and grape) and other flavor options.
Bonnita, a Mannington native, said her husband and son, who both work in construction, previously lived and worked in Texas for five years, and she and her daughter Alyssa would go down and spend the summers with them. They noticed that Texas, where Joe is originally from, had a lot of shaved ice businesses.
For about four years, the family had been thinking about starting their own shaved ice business in their hometown of Mannington. They wanted to be able to enjoy this treat during the summer evenings in West Virginia. This spring, they decided to bring that dream to life.
