WHITE HALL —
The Cave is “a collaboration of coolness,” said manager John Wyrick.
Freedom Worship Center opened The Cave, which stands for collectibles, antiques, vintage, etc., on Jan. 11 at the Middletown Mall in White Hall. Customers can find the store across from Hank’s Deli, where Game Exchange was previously located.
Wyrick, who lives in Fairmont, has been involved in ministry as a pastor, evangelist, missionary and musician for about 25 years. He takes care of the shop’s day-to-day operations.
“We’re specializing in vintage material,” he said.
The Cave offers a variety of vintage collectibles and record albums. In fact, there is so much vinyl that people often think it’s a record store when they visit, Wyrick said. The albums have been very popular.
The business carries more unique collectibles, such as guitars, other musical instruments and amps. Customers can also browse the vintage rock posters, of Jim Morrison and Def Leppard to Bon Jovi and The Beatles, and vintage concert shirts, some going back to the 1970s.
The Cave buys, sells and trades items, and many collectibles are also donated.
Last summer, Freedom Worship Center established Freedom Ministries Thrift Store, a cross between an antique or vintage collectible shop and a huge indoor yard sale, along old Route 73. People often stopped by to sell or donate items, and the vintage pieces and record albums began to accumulate, Wyrick said.
So he decided to divide and focus on the collectibles at a new location inside the Middletown Mall.
“It’s very easily accessible here because of the location being close to the interstate,” Wyrick said. “Plus, the mall has a very long history here in Fairmont, and I would love to see it succeed and come back and flourish all over again. I think that many people here in Fairmont would love to see that also.”
He said he’s strongly in favor of supporting local businesses in Fairmont.
Wyrick’s 15-year-old son, Zechariah Bender, spearheaded the efforts to renovate the store space.
Bender and a few other teenagers who are active in the church volunteered to do the remodeling as a project, which included tearing down walls, painting, cleaning the carpets and other work. Wyrick said they did an amazing job.
“It was completely the result of volunteers,” he said. “It is absolutely their work that made the place ... open as quickly as it did.”
Bender helps out with running the store and Wyrick’s wife, Rebecca, also lends a hand.
“I’m very pleased,” Wyrick said of business so far. “There’s a lot of traffic and there are a lot of customers. It really seems to be a blessing and people enjoy it.”
While Freedom Ministries Thrift Store hasn’t been open this year, Wyrick intends to operate the business again. Right now, the space is primarily used for storage, but he is considering the idea of opening for special sales and weekend promotions.
The Cave is open from about 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information, call 304-612-7073.
