  • FBI scams top online fraud schemes in 2009

    Last year, the Internet Crime Complaint Center saw dramatic growth in online fraud complaints and reported dollar losses.

    IC3 just released its 2009 Internet Crime Report and held a teleconference on March 12 to announce and discuss the findings.

    That’s why they recently decided to take over the Curves for Women facility in Fairmont. Chaplin and Gregory, both originally from Fairmont, became the new co-owners on March 1.

    FOX Engineering PLLC, with a location in Fairmont, “is setting goals and raising standards.”

    Owner and president Jennifer Fox, a structural engineer specializing in bridge design and bridge inspection, has been doing this work for 16 years. She earned her bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from West Virginia University and is a registered professional engineer in several states.

  • WVU researcher gets DARPA grant for study on cyber attacks

    With funding from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, a West Virginia University teacher is developing techniques to be able to decrease the threat of cyber attacks.

    Jonathan Boyd, assistant professor of chemistry at WVU, is a toxicologist by training, and most of his work focuses on the determination of cellular data and the processes involved. His research involves apoptosis, which is the suicidal process of cells.

    The Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure (CARD) Act is an effort to protect consumers and help them make better decisions.

    Congress passed the Credit CARD Act, with both the House and Senate showing great bipartisan support, and President Barack Obama signed it into law in May 2009.

    Valley Auto Body opened last May at 2556 Smithtown Road, between Fairmont and Morgantown on Old Route 73.

    Customers can get to the shop by taking Exit 146 — Goshen Road — off Interstate 79 and then traveling less than a mile along Route 73 South.

  • WVU entities ‘to engage the public in water efficiency/water conservation’

    The National Environmental Services Center and the College of Business and Economics, both at West Virginia University, are partnering to study water conservation and increase awareness.

    Gerald R. Iwan, Ph.D., director of NESC at WVU, said the entities were notified in December 2009 that they had been awarded a $600,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
