Coming into Saturday’s all-important home game with Cabell Midland, the Polar Bears had allowed just one goal on the year — which, of all things, skimmed off a defender and into the net — and was riding a streak of seven straight shutouts. Instead of faltering against Class AAA’s top-ranked team, West only amped its intensity. Oh, the defense, too. The result was a 1-0 victory, eighth shutout in a row and what most certainly will be a significant jump from the team’s current spot, No. 6, in the state rankings.
