FAIRMONT — This morning, the lives of the Turner family in Fairmont were forever changed when they heard Extreme Makeover Design Team Leader Ty Pennington’s famous “good morning” wake-up call. Pennington, along with the other designers, surprised the unsuspecting family with news that their home has been chosen to receive a makeover.
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is literally a race against the clock with a team of contractors, designers, and nearly 500 volunteers who have just one week to build an entire house – interior, exterior, and even the landscaping. The Turner family was chosen out as the first ever West Virginia family to receive an Extreme Makeover: Home Edition because their story is one of redemption and community spirit.
When they married on August 9, 2003, Angie and her kids, Theresa, Tyron and Desmond opened up not only their hearts but also their home to Richard, his daughter Layton and Richard’s 13 year-old cousin, Michael. While they are a loving, happy family now life hasn’t always been this rosy for Angie and Richard. They have both had some difficulties in their past, which they each worked tirelessly to overcome these incredible hurdles.
When they married in 2003, Angie and Richard Turner transformed their family into a modern day “Brady Bunch.” Angie, her daughter Theresa, and sons Tyron and Desmond, welcomed Richard, his daughter Layton and cousin Michael, into their home after the marriage. In addition to dedicating their lives to their children, the Turners serve as positive role models for the local youth as they strive to keep children off the streets by coaching football, basketball and cheerleading, fundraising and mentoring. While keeping the local kids on track, the Turners are also care takers for mentally challenged adults. They hope to open up their own business to help the mentally challenged someday. The Turner’s rotting home, which is less than 600 square feet, is not sufficient for this caring family of seven. The flooring is unstable, the kitchen cabinets are falling off and there isn’t even enough sleeping space for the whole family. Teresa and Layton share a bed, while Desmond, Tyson, and Michael sleep on the floor. There is simply not enough room for the family to function or even eat dinner together at the dining room table. It is now time for Ty and his crew to return the kindness and generosity to this family with big hearts who give their all to the community.
By building this family a new home, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Huffman Corporation, it’s partners, and the City of Fairmont will be returning the gift of giving to help the Turner’s who gives so much of themselves to their community.
“In our 30 year history we have always tried to help other people,” explained Wayne Huffman, president of Huffman Corporation. “By helping build the Turner family’s dream home gives us the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of a family who has made such a positive impact on the youth in the community of Fairmont. It will be our most challenging project to date.
“Huffman Corporation does not treat this project as a challenge but as an opportunity to show how our talented employees can work together with the community in providing this deserving family a new home.”
