MORGANTOWN — Another day, another arrest, and so it goes in a suddenly troubled West Virginia University football program.
Two days after defensive tackle Scooter Berry was arrested and charged with a pair of misdemeanors after an early morning downtown run-in with police, reserve safety Courtney Stuart was arrested on a fugitive warrant from Arizona relating to a 2007 burglary.
Stuart, a redshirt junior from Flagstaff, Ariz., who transferred to WVU from Phoenix College in 2008, played in the season’s first two games but has not played since.
Stuart was arrested on warrants from Maricopa County in Arizona and is in the North Central Regional Jail. According to court documents obtained by The Dominion Post, he was charged with “being a fugitive from justice in Arizona,” but his attorney, Corwin Townsend, told that paper he was not a fugitive.
“He’s never run from those charges. They’ve always known he had an attorney and that I was in Arizona,” Townsend said.
Townsend said the charges came out of an incident at a party where a laptop and some CDs were taken from an apartment.
“The property was returned,” Townsend told the paper. “This kid was investigated and no charges were ever filed. I represented him at that stage two years ago. They never prosecuted. Nothing came of it.”
West Virginia coach Bill Stewart said he was still trying to gather information on the matter and would not make a statement until the fact-finding process was complete.
