Consumers should read ingredient lists and warning labels when buying over-the-counter (OTC) cough and cold remedies, and other non-prescription drugs to guard against unwanted side effects. The first rule is to talk with your pharmacist or doctor if you have any questions, said Dr. Tara Whetsel of the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy.
